Back in March when I signed up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon, it seemed so far away. Now, the race is only two weeks away, and I’m excited to head to Virginia Beach!
The half marathon is on Sunday, Sept. 3, but the weekend also includes a 5K and the Mile in the Sand on Saturday, Sept. 2. (The date of the 5K has changed since my first post on this race, earlier this year.)
There’s plenty of bling to earn, whether you decide to run one race, two or all three. You can save $15 on the half marathon with the code “BIBRAVE15.” See what all the medals look like and how to earn them here.

This will be my second Rock ‘n’ Roll race — I ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington, D.C. Half Marathon earlier this year, also for BibRave. (Read my recap of that race here.) That race took place on a cold day in March, so I’m sure the weather will be much different for this one.
Doing both races will earn me the Double Beat Heavy Medal.
Because I expect it will be hot — it’s Labor Day weekend — I am not setting a time goal. I’d like to feel like I gave the race a good effort, but I’m not going to hold myself to any certain time. I want to be able to enjoy the entire weekend at the beach with my friends.
I started marathon training for the Richmond Marathon about three weeks ago. I’m following a long-run training plan, so my weekend long runs have been 8 miles, 10 miles, 12 miles and 8 miles so far. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon fit in perfectly, and these long runs are helping me prep for the race. I usually don’t follow much of a plan for a half marathon, but I do run a good amount, and I’m glad I will have these long runs in the bank.
Of course, Rock ‘n’ Roll races include music — otherwise, they wouldn’t be Rock ‘n’ Roll races! The headliner for this year’s Virginia Beach race is Sister Hazel, and a half marathon bib will get runners into the American Music Festival; a 5K bib will also provide some access. Here are the details on access and here’s the American Music Festival website.
Running a race at the beach certainly provides for a fun atmosphere. Check out this video to get an idea of what the course is like.
