Rockin’ and Rollin’ to my next RnR race: Virginia Beach!

Imagine sand here instead of grass! The Family Stone was the headliner at United Airlines Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington D.C. on March 11. The headliner for the Virginia Beach race on Sept. 3 is Sister Hazel. (Vanessa Junkin photo)

Labor Day weekend is going to rock this year — literally! I’ve signed up for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach half marathon, which is coming up Sept. 3. I will be running the race for BibRave, and I already know that at least two of my friends will be running as well — Veronica and Lynn.

I ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington D.C. half marathon earlier this year and enjoyed it. It was cold at the after party, but that’s something I don’t expect will happen when I take part in the Virginia Beach race — it’s in the summer!

Race weekend includes the half marathon and 5K on Sunday, Sept. 3, both at 7 a.m., and the Mile on the Sand the day before — Saturday, Sept. 2, at 8:30 a.m. The expo is open Friday, Sept. 1, from 1-7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

If you run the Mile on the Sand and either the half marathon or 5K, you’re eligible for one of the cool Remix Challenge medals.

I personally won’t be there early enough to take part in the Mile on the Sand, but I will be earning a special Heavy Medal — the Double Beat — for participating in two Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathons this year.

One thing my friend Veronica mentioned — which is going to be awesome — is the fact that we’ll be doing this race when it’s actually summer, so we’ll be able to enjoy the beach, as well — unlike at other races when we’ve been there in the off-season. We have had fun walking around town and exploring, but it will be fun to relax on the beach and maybe get in the ocean. She has already booked a place where we’ll stay.

Here’s a screenshot of the Double Beat Heavy Medal I will be eligible to receive after participating in Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series events in Washington, D.C. and Virginia Beach.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is great with keeping participants informed via email and social media, and I recently got an email titled “Things That Rock In VB.” Here’s the link that was attached, featuring a video, race shirts and the headliner, Sister Hazel.

There will also be bands throughout the course. (In the video, I saw people with water guns on the course, too — it will be much appreciated if those return!) Listen to more music on the beach at the American Music Festival on Sunday night, included with your entry, if you run the 5K or half marathon, according to the Rock ‘n’ Roll website.

Runners get to finish on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk — how cool is that? This year’s medal hasn’t been released as far as I know, but last year’s was a sandcastle, which would be a pretty cool addition to my collection.

So, are you ready to register? Current prices as of April 2 are $20.99 for the Mile in the Sand, $75.99 for the half marathon and $35.99 for the 5K. The price increase date is not listed, so you may want to get on that! Register here.
